Yard Assistant (Transport)

Location: On-site
Job Type: Part-time (17 hours p/w)
Schedule: Friday & Saturday 8:00 – 17:00 30 min break & holiday cover as required
Reports to: Transport Supervisor

Key Responsibilities

Yard Operations & Vehicle Movement

• Safely shunt HGVs, tanker vehicles, CIP lorries, trailers, and other company vehicles around the site in accordance with company procedures and health & safety requirements.
• Direct and coordinate vehicle movements within the yard to maintain safe traffic flow and minimise delays.
• Assist drivers with safe parking, loading bay positioning, and site navigation.
• Carry out routine yard inspections and report any damage, defects, hazards, or maintenance concerns.
• Ensure all yard areas remain clean, organised, and operational at all times.

Loading, Unloading & Material Handling

• Assist with loading and unloading vehicles safely and efficiently.
• Move materials, pallets, equipment, and supplies around the site as required.
• Support stock movements between departments and storage locations.
• Ensure products and materials are handled correctly to prevent damage or contamination.
• Secure loads and prepare items for transportation where required.

Site Support & Facilities

• Assist operational teams with general labouring duties as required.
• Support factory and production departments during busy periods.
• Help maintain site security by reporting unauthorised visitors, damage, or suspicious activity.
• Assist with waste management, recycling, and disposal activities in line with company procedures.

Health, Safety & Compliance

• Adhere to all company health & safety policies, procedures, and site rules.
• Wear and maintain the appropriate PPE at all times.
• Report accidents, incidents, near misses, hazards, and unsafe conditions immediately.
• Ensure safe working practices are followed when operating vehicles, equipment, and machinery.

Teamwork & Communication

• Work closely with supervisors, drivers, warehouse personnel, and production teams to support efficient site operations.
• Communicate effectively regarding vehicle movements, maintenance issues, and operational priorities.
• Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to assist across different departments.
• Maintain a positive, professional, and proactive approach to all duties.

Skills & Requirements

• Previous experience working in a yard, industrial, warehouse, transport, or manufacturing environment.
• Experience shunting HGVs, trailers, tankers, or commercial vehicles is desirable.
• Full UK Driving Licence.
• HGV Licence desirable but not essential.
• Ability to safely operate yard equipment and machinery.
• Good understanding of health & safety requirements within an operational environment.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Capable of carrying out manual handling and outdoor work in all weather conditions.
• Willingness to undertake additional training, including First Aid and Forklift where required.

• Perform any other reasonable duties requested by supervisors or managers to support the needs of the business.

Pay: £13.20 per hour
