What they need

LEAD YOUR PROGRAM. DEVELOP YOUR TEAM. CREATE AN EXPERIENCE.

NOW HIRING: SITE COORDINATORS

YMCA Expanded Learning Program

Great afterschool programs don't happen by accident.

They happen because someone takes ownership.

The YMCA Expanded Learning Program is looking for Site Coordinators who are ready to lead a school-based program, develop a strong team, build meaningful partnerships, and create an environment where students want to be every day.

As a Site Coordinator, you won't simply oversee the daily schedule. You'll be responsible for bringing the program to life. You'll set expectations for your team, coach team members toward growth, solve problems, strengthen program quality, and build relationships with approximately 100 students, families, school leaders, and community partners.

If you're ready for a leadership position where you're trusted to make decisions, develop people, and continuously improve the program you lead, this could be your next move.

POSITION OVERVIEW

  • Pay: $33/hour
  • Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt
  • Start Date: Immediate
  • Position Duration: Year-Round
  • Hours: Approximately 40 hours/week
  • Typical Schedule: Monday–Friday
  • Typical Shift: 10:00 AM–6:30 PM
  • Location: Assigned to one elementary or middle school program site in Richmond, El Sobrante, Pinole, San Pablo, or Oakland
  • Map of Program Sites: http://map.ymcayscholars.org

BENEFITS

  • Free YMCA gym membership
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Paid holidays and paid time off
  • YMCA retirement plan
  • Ongoing leadership development and professional training
  • Opportunities for continued career advancement within the YMCA

THIS IS A YEAR-ROUND LEADERSHIP POSITION

Our Site Coordinators work a year-round schedule that follows a combination of the YMCA and school district calendars.

While most of the year is centered around the school-year afterschool program, Site Coordinators also work select days and weeks when school is not in session. This typically includes district professional development days, approximately one week during winter break, one week during spring break, and approximately 6–7 weeks of summer programming.

ABOUT THE YMCA EXPANDED LEARNING PROGRAM

At the YMCA Expanded Learning Program, we envision a world where every student discovers their purpose and reaches their full potential.

Every day, we elevate youth voice through enrichment experiences that build leadership, strengthen healthy habits, encourage learning, and help young people discover new interests.

Our programs serve elementary and middle school students throughout West Contra Costa and Oakland, with enrichment centered around three core areas:

  • Academic Achievement
  • Physical Play
  • Creative Curiosity

We believe students deserve more than a place to go after school. They deserve a program where they feel known, challenged, supported, and excited to participate.

Strong programs require strong leaders.

That's where you come in.

WHAT YOU'LL LEAD

As a Site Coordinator, you are the leader of your school site.

You'll take ownership of your program's people, culture, quality, relationships, and day-to-day operations. You'll receive support and coaching from your Program Managers, but you'll be expected to take initiative, make sound decisions, and lead your team toward shared goals.

Lead Your Team

  • Set clear expectations and create a positive, accountable team culture
  • Coach, supervise, and develop your team members
  • Provide regular feedback and help team members strengthen their skills
  • Train and support new team members
  • Delegate responsibilities and follow through on expectations
  • Address performance concerns professionally and proactively
  • Model the professionalism, communication, and leadership you expect from your team

Lead the Student Experience

  • Ensure students experience a safe, welcoming, engaging, and well-organized program every day
  • Guide your team in delivering high-quality enrichment activities
  • Observe program activities and provide coaching to improve facilitation and student engagement
  • Use student voice and feedback to continuously strengthen the program
  • Create an environment where students build relationships, explore interests, stay active, and develop leadership skills
  • Respond effectively to student behavior and support your team in creating positive group environments

Lead the Program

  • Manage the daily operation of your assigned school site
  • Establish goals and continuously evaluate progress toward them
  • Maintain accurate enrollment, attendance, staffing, and program records
  • Use data and observations to identify opportunities for improvement
  • Manage site resources and program budgets responsibly
  • Ensure required reports, documentation, and administrative responsibilities are completed accurately and on time
  • Maintain compliance with YMCA, school district, safety, and program requirements
  • Anticipate challenges, solve problems, and communicate when additional support is needed

Lead the Partnerships

  • Serve as the primary YMCA program contact at your assigned school
  • Build strong working relationships with school administrators, teachers, families, and community partners
  • Communicate professionally and consistently with families
  • Collaborate with school partners to respond to student and program needs
  • Represent the YMCA Expanded Learning Program with professionalism
  • Build trust by following through on commitments and communicating proactively

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

We're looking for someone who wants more than a job working with youth.

We're looking for someone who wants to lead people and build a strong program.

You may be a great fit if you are someone who:

  • Takes ownership instead of waiting to be told what to do
  • Enjoys developing people and helping others become stronger at their work
  • Can balance relationships with accountability
  • Remains calm and solutions-focused when plans change
  • Communicates clearly, directly, and professionally
  • Notices what needs improvement and takes action
  • Can manage multiple priorities without losing sight of the student experience
  • Welcomes feedback and applies it
  • Reflects on your own leadership and how your actions affect others
  • Takes accountability when something doesn't go as planned
  • Believes strong teams are built through trust, consistency, communication, and clear expectations
  • Wants to continue growing as a leader

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 2 years of experience in youth development, education, expanded learning, recreation, childcare, or related programming
  • At least 1 year of experience leading or supervising staff, volunteers, and/or programs
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • 48 completed college units or a passing score on the Instructional Aide Exam
  • Need to take the exam? We can support you through the process.
  • Ability to successfully clear required DOJ/FBI background checks
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED certification within 30 days of hire
  • Training is provided at no cost to you.
  • Reliable transportation and ability to consistently travel to program sites, trainings, and meetings
  • Comfortable using technology and learning the systems required for the position, including Google Workspace, Airtable, Zoom, and other program management platforms

THE LEADERS WHO THRIVE HERE

Our strongest Site Coordinators don't expect to have every answer on day one.

They are willing to learn.

They ask questions. They seek feedback. They communicate early. They experiment with new approaches. They take responsibility when something isn't working and help their team find a better way forward.

Most importantly, they understand that leadership isn't just about managing tasks.

It's about creating the conditions for other people to succeed.

When your team becomes stronger, your program becomes stronger—and students feel the difference.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described below are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions.

  • Ability to actively supervise youth in indoor and outdoor environments
  • Sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to participate in and supervise program activities
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 30 pounds
  • Frequent standing, walking, and bending
  • Ability to walk and remain active for extended periods
