MAIN PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF JOB:

· To provide direct therapeutic support to clients accessing our service in a safe, supportive, non-judgmental way.

· To work with an understanding that self-harm is a maladaptive coping strategy and to explore the underlying issues driving this as well as alternative coping strategies.

· To empower the individual to take responsibility for their self-harming and work to a minimization or cessation of their self-harm.

· To regularly report to the Counselling Coordinator overseeing the progress of client work.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Provide the basis for a good therapeutic relationship.

• Offer weekly one to one counselling sessions.
• Offer skills, resources or creative ways of working where appropriate - ie. where these will enhance recovery.
• Offer sign-posting to other agencies when needed.

NETWORKING:

• To build links with other professional organisations and, if the client’s case is multi-agency, to ensure communication upholds the client’s best interests.

DEVELOPMENT:

• To work with all staff to develop the service and its activities both within SAFA and occasionally in outreach locations in response to client needs.
• To liaise with clients to promote user involvement and representation and enable the development of services that meet their needs.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

· To work within the core values that SAFA has adopted within its constitution, policies and procedures.

• To provide psycho-educational input to individuals who self-harm and those people who support them.
• To offer professionally qualified counselling within the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy Ethical Framework (or equivalent).
• To respond to referrals following assessment as soon as possible and within 2 weeks, where possible within contracted hours.
• To provide encouragement and assistance in harm reduction and care of wounds where needed.
• Maintain agency confidentiality.
• Address crises while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
• Complete all necessary case notes on time.
• Refer any safeguarding issues to the Designated Safeguarding Lead and complete all necessary paperwork.
• A commitment to the protection of children, young people and vulnerable adults as well as adherence to SAFA’s Safeguarding policies and the undertaking of safeguarding training every three years.
• Must attend clinical case work supervision on a regular monthly basis according to SAFA’s policy and BACP Guidelines.
• Undertake continuing professional development training as is deemed appropriate in accordance with professional guidelines.
• Hold appropriate indemnity insurance.

Licence/Certification:

• Dip (HE) in Counselling or above (required)
• Membership of BACP or equivalent
