Essential Functions

The Dance Instructor is responsible for planning, implementing, leading, and teaching a varied selection of dance classes. Current styles of dance offered at a recreational level are ballet, tap, hip hop and poms. At a competitive level dancers participate in jazz, lyrical, and musical theater. Classes will be taught in a manner that contributes to the student’s wellbeing, growth, and development. The instructor will need to provide an environment that is comfortable, safe, and fun. The current class schedule runs through mid-March: Mondays 4:30-6:45pm, Tuesdays 4:30-8:15pm, Wednesdays 4:30-7pm.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of the park district’s policies and operations and enforce them in a positive manner
• Plan dance classes for the three annual program brochures
• Work with the supervisor on the annual dance recital, and work at the dance rehearsal and recital
• Must wait until class participants have proper means home before leaving
• Takes program attendance regularly and turn it into the supervisor at the end of each session
• Work with supervisor and other dance instructors to develop dance program
• Attend and participate in staff and training meetings

· Perform other duties and functions as assigned

• Help dancers develop large and fine motor skills
• Assists supervisor with costume selection and purchasing
• Attend dance competition(s) for the Expressions Dance Company program

Risk Management

· Actively supports and enforces the safety program instituted by the Park District

• Maintains a working knowledge of all general agency and department-specific safety rules
• Attends required safety program and in-service education meetings as directed
• Corrects unsafe conditions and/or reports them to your director supervisor
• Enforces safety disciplinary policies and procedures
• Uses protective gloves, masks and other personal protective equipment (PPE) to prevent exposure to pathogens

Required Qualifications:

• Must have studied some form of dance, related to the classes being taught, for at least one year.
• Must have a high school diploma.
• Must be able to communicate effectively with students, parents, and park district staff.

Recommended Qualifications:

• Certification in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) within 3 months of employment
• Have at least six months to one year teaching experience.
• Experience instructing competition level dancers in the forms of jazz, lyrical, and musical theater.

5. Employee will be required to perform the following work:

Sedentary Work Lifting 10 pounds maximum and occasionally lifting and/or carrying such articles as dockets, ledgers and small tools. Although a sedentary job is defined as one which involves sitting, a certain amount of walking and standing is often necessary in carrying out job duties. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and other sedentary criteria are met.

Light Work. Lifting 20 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job is in this category when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree or when it involves sitting most of the time with a degree of pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls.

Light Medium Work. Lifting 30 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
