- Concept Test: Based on the sample video title below, briefly describe how you would approach the thumbnail:
"I Invested $50 Instead of Spending It. Here's What Happened."
Do not create the thumbnail unless requested. We want to understand how you think about the concept.About the Role
We are looking for a creative, highly skilled YouTube Thumbnail Designer who understands what makes people stop scrolling and click.
This is not simply a graphic design position.
We need someone who understands YouTube psychology, curiosity, visual storytelling, and click-through rate (CTR) and can turn financial topics into simple, compelling thumbnails.
Our channel covers personal finance, investing, taxes, wealth building, retirement, and everyday money decisions. Many of these topics can feel complicated or boring at first glance. Your job is to make them feel interesting, relatable, and impossible to ignore.
You will work from video topics, titles, scripts, screenshots, and photos to develop thumbnail concepts designed specifically for YouTube.
Key Responsibilities
- Thumbnail Concept Development: Turn video ideas and titles into compelling visual concepts that create curiosity without simply repeating the title.
- High-CTR Design: Create thumbnails designed to stand out on the YouTube homepage, Suggested Videos, and mobile devices.
- Visual Storytelling: Communicate the core idea, tension, question, or emotion of a video through one simple visual.
- Strong Visual Hierarchy: Use faces, expressions, objects, numbers, arrows, charts, money graphics, and short text strategically to immediately direct the viewer's attention.
- Finance Visualization: Make topics involving money, taxes, investing, percentages, salaries, retirement accounts, and financial decisions visually interesting and easy to understand.
- Photo Manipulation: Professionally cut out, enhance, resize, color-correct, and composite images while maintaining a realistic and polished appearance.
- Thumbnail Variations: Create multiple concepts or variations when needed so we can test different hooks, layouts, expressions, or text.
- Brand Consistency: Develop a recognizable visual identity while ensuring thumbnails do not become repetitive or overly templated.
- Mobile Optimization: Ensure thumbnails remain clear and compelling when viewed at small sizes on mobile devices.
- Revisions: Quickly incorporate feedback and make revisions when necessary.
What We Are Looking For
We want someone who understands that a successful YouTube thumbnail is not necessarily the prettiest design—it is the design that earns the click.
You should understand concepts such as:
- Curiosity gaps
- Click-through rate (CTR)
- Visual hierarchy
- Contrast and readability
- Emotional facial expressions
- Thumbnail/title combinations
- Designing for mobile
- Keeping thumbnails simple rather than overcrowded
You should also understand that the title and thumbnail work together.
For example, if the title already says:
"Why I Stopped Keeping Money in Savings"
the thumbnail should not simply say:
"WHY I STOPPED KEEPING MONEY IN SAVINGS."
Instead, the thumbnail might visually create another question or piece of tension that makes someone want to know more.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Proven YouTube Thumbnail Portfolio: Must provide examples of thumbnails specifically created for YouTube.
- Strong Understanding of YouTube: You should actively understand modern YouTube thumbnail trends and what drives clicks.
- Graphic Design Skills: Strong proficiency in Photoshop, Photopea, Canva, Affinity Photo, or similar professional design software.
- Photo Manipulation Skills: Ability to create realistic composites, cutouts, lighting effects, shadows, and visual effects.
- Finance/Educational Content Experience Preferred: Experience creating thumbnails for personal finance, investing, business, education, self-improvement, or similar channels is a major plus.
- Strong Typography: Ability to use large, readable text effectively without overcrowding thumbnails.
- Attention to Detail: Strong understanding of composition, facial positioning, spacing, contrast, and visual balance.
- Reliability: Ability to meet deadlines consistently and respond to feedback efficiently.
- Creativity: Ability to propose thumbnail concepts rather than simply waiting for exact design instructions.
Typical Workflow
For each video, you may receive:
- Video title or working title
- Video topic
- Script or summary
- Photos of the creator
- Screenshots or graphics
- Examples of thumbnails/styles we like
- Specific ideas or concepts when applicable
We want the designer to bring ideas to the table, not simply execute instructions.
When appropriate, we may ask you to recommend 2–3 different thumbnail concepts before designing the final thumbnail.
Deliverables
For each approved thumbnail:
- 1280 × 720 pixels
- 16:9 aspect ratio
- High-resolution JPG or PNG
- YouTube-ready file
- Editable/source file when requested
Depending on the project, we may also request 2–3 thumbnail variations for testing.
Important
We are specifically looking for someone who understands YouTube thumbnails—not simply a general graphic designer.
Applicants who only submit logos, flyers, social media graphics, or general graphic design portfolios without strong YouTube thumbnail examples will not be considered.
We are looking to develop an ongoing relationship with the right designer as the channel grows.
Pay: $200.00 - $600.00 per month
