Job offer – Backstage Lead Developer

Context and objective of the mission

The mission is part of a large-scale initiative in the energy sector aimed at supporting a sustainable, reliable, and innovative infrastructure. The external service provider will support the organization in the analysis, design, extension, and operation of its existing Backstage platform. The scope includes architectural consulting, plugin development, platform extensions, integrations, and comprehensive technical documentation.

Main responsibilities

Technical concept and architecture design
• Develop technical concepts for the extension and adaptation of the existing Backstage platform
• Design scalable, high-performance, and maintainable solutions in compliance with internal IT, architecture, security, and compliance standards
• Analyze and take into account security requirements, operating models, and target architectures
• Formulate technical recommendations and decision-support documentation for future platform extensions and strategic evolution

Architecture and platform analysis
• Perform comprehensive analysis of the architecture framework and Backstage architecture
• Assess existing technologies, interfaces, plugin structures, and integration mechanisms
• Gather project-specific and domain-specific requirements from organizational, functional, and technical perspectives
• Consolidate and present analysis results to support architecture and design decisions within the project

Backstage plugin design and development
• Design, develop, test, and document custom Backstage plugins for both frontend and backend
• Implement defined technical and business workflows and use cases
• Integrate plugins with internal systems, services, and end-to-end process chains
• Prepare clear and traceable technical documentation such as API designs, interface flows, and configuration parameters

Platform extension and customization
• Implement adaptations and extensions to the Backstage platform
• Enhance frontend and backend components to support organizational structures, role models, and business processes
• Ensure compliance with functional and non-functional requirements, including performance, stability, security, and maintainability
• Design and implement technical improvements based on project outcomes and stakeholder requirements

Backend services and integrations
• Extend and configure the Backstage backend to support additional services and integrations
• Integrate internal tools, APIs, CI/CD pipelines, identity management, and asset systems
• Configure and document interfaces, authentication, and authorization mechanisms
• Provide technical advisory services regarding integration patterns, security architectures, and operating models

Technical documentation and knowledge transfer
• Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including architecture overviews, technical design specifications, and plugin and API documentation
• Document workflows, interfaces, integrations, and configuration decisions
• Ensure transparency for operations, further development, and effective knowledge transfer within the project context

Profile required

Experience
• At least 2 years of proven experience in the design, customization, extension, and maintenance of Backstage
• Demonstrated experience in the development and customization of Backstage plugins, including both frontend and backend plugins
• At least 4 years of experience in developing backend services using Node.js, preferably in the context of platform or integration solutions
• At least 3 years of experience in developing frontend applications using React
• At least 1 year of experience in the design and implementation of CI/CD pipelines, preferably using Azure DevOps
• Proven experience with Docker and Kubernetes, particularly in the operation and deployment of platform services
• Experience with Azure or comparable cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP, especially in the context of cloud-native applications and platform services

Additional information
• Full-time assignment
• Onsite presence of 2 days per week required by default
• For consultants working in Belgium, non-EU candidates must have a valid work permit and residence permit
