What they need

CNC Applications Engineer

CNC Programming | Process Engineering | Multi-Axis Machining

DuPage Machine Products | Bloomingdale, IL | Index Department | Reports to President

Position Overview

DuPage Machine Products is seeking a CNC Applications Engineer to develop machining processes, create CNC programs, and support production across CNC turning, Swiss-type, and multispindle machines. This hands-on role works from customer prints to develop part proposals, select machines and tooling, create tool layouts and offset prints, prove out new processes, train production personnel, and troubleshoot equipment. The ideal candidate brings strong CNC programming experience, blueprint and GD&T knowledge, and practical machining expertise.

Growth Opportunities

We are currently adding to our staff and bringing in new machines, creating opportunities for team members to develop their skills and grow with the company.

Key Responsibilities

Prepare technical proposals from customer prints, identifying the appropriate machine, material, estimated cycle time or parts per hour, tooling cost, secondary operations, and outside services.

Develop machining processes, including operation sequence, machine and cutting tool selection, workholding, and process choices such as drilling, reaming, boring, burnishing, broaching, threading, tapping, polygon turning, and milling.

Determine machining parameters, including speeds, feeds, and depth of cut, based on workpiece material, cutting tool material, tool geometry, and required results.

Create CNC programs using PartMaker or ESPRIT CAD/CAM for CNC turning centers, Swiss-type CNC lathes, and multispindle machines. Support equipment from manufacturers including Index, Miyano, Star, Mori Seiki, Okuma, Daewoo, Takamaz, and ZPS, with Siemens 840D, Fanuc, Okuma OSP, and Mitsubishi controls.

Create and maintain tooling layout sheets listing tools and setup hardware, including AutoCrib inventory numbers for perishable tooling. Prepare color-coded offset prints that show operators how each tool affects part geometry, and update documents as processes change.

Create Zoller tool presetter part files for Index and Star ST38 processes.

Train personnel in machine setup, operation, and repair for Index and CNC department equipment. Perform setups when the department is behind or a setup person is unavailable, and set up and prove out new processes and complex parts.

Monitor and improve cycle time and process capability across CNC machines. Participate in corrective action meetings with Quality and provide technical solutions to process inefficiencies and quality concerns.

Troubleshoot and repair machinery. Use Siemens Step 7 PLC knowledge to investigate machine logic issues, consult machine manufacturers when needed, identify economical replacement components, and coordinate mechanical and electronic component repair or remanufacture.

Manufacture, repair, and replace machine tool parts.

Qualifications

Three to five years of CNC machine programming experience.

Knowledge of machining processes and CNC machines, including multi-axis machining.

Knowledge of blueprint reading, GD&T, inspection equipment, and cutting tools and tooling.

Knowledge of Siemens Step 7 PLC programming to troubleshoot machine logic is required.

Ability to communicate effectively and work with production, Quality, and other departments.

Work Environment

This position works in a professional office and periodically enters the manufacturing environment around moving machinery and equipment. Personal protective equipment must be worn in the manufacturing plant. Some assignments may involve aerospace parts and require aerospace-specific training. Other duties and responsibilities may change as business needs evolve.
