What they need

About the Trust

Trust Tairāwhiti is the regional community trust, with a strategic focus on economic development, community initiatives and investments that support the wellbeing of our people and place. We have an aspiration for a region of Te Mana – Shared Pride, Te Ihi – Shared Prosperity, and Te Wehi – Shared Opportunity, with the vision that our people, whānau and communities can live the lives we value in ways that matter to us.

About the opportunity

Help shape the future of the Tairāwhiti visitor economy. In this role, you will support the delivery of destination development projects, visitor-attracting events and industry initiatives that contribute to Tairāwhiti becoming a thriving and sustainable visitor destination.

As the Destination Development Advisor, you'll be a champion for tourism in Tairāwhiti. You will work with tourism businesses, event organisers, industry partners and other stakeholders to strengthen the region’s visitor offering. You will help identify and develop new tourism products and visitor-attracting events, connect businesses with relevant opportunities, and support initiatives that build industry capability. Your understanding of regional initiatives will be crucial in strategically positioning both new and established products for maximum visibility.

You will be a bridge between businesses, industry organisations, and government agencies, creating a collaborative and trusting environment across the entire sector.  Your passion for Tairāwhiti will extend to advocating for the visitor economy at regional and national levels.  You will work with partners to turn the aspirations of the Tairāwhiti Destination Management Plan into action. This may include managing projects, supporting cruise tourism operations, wayfinding initiatives, industry workshops, capability-building programmes and other projects that improve the visitor experience and strengthen the regional tourism sector.

You will work alongside the Regional Destination Manager, Destination Marketing Manager, isite Team Leader, the economic development team and wider Trust to deliver regional destination priorities.

What will you bring:

To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring the following:

·       Relevant experience in tourism development, project management, events, business or a related area.

·       A strong understanding of the New Zealand tourism industry and knowledge of the Tairāwhiti tourism landscape, economic context, opportunities and development aspirations.

·       Proven project management skills, including planning, budgeting, risk management, stakeholder coordination and reporting.

·       The ability to manage multiple priorities, stay organised and deliver work to agreed deadlines.

·       Strong relationship-building and listening skills, with the ability to work effectively with tourism businesses, event organisers, industry partners, government agencies and mana whenua.

·       Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including clear reporting, professional writing, presentations and facilitation.

·       A proactive and solutions-focused approach, together with a high level of cultural competency and an understanding of Te Ao Māori, tikanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
