The ideal candidate will have extensive hands-on experience installing, splicing, terminating, troubleshooting, and repairing medium-voltage power cables rated from 5 kV through 35 kV and above, with a strong understanding of cable construction, insulation systems, shielding, grounding, and industry-standard installation practices.

Candidates holding a National Cable Splicing Certification Board (NCSCB) certification are strongly preferred.

This position involves working on critical electrical infrastructure, including utility substations, industrial facilities, power generation plants, data centers, and commercial power distribution systems.

We are looking for a motivated professional who takes pride in quality workmanship, understands the importance of electrical safety, and can independently perform complex medium-voltage cable installations and repairs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, splice, terminate, troubleshoot, and repair medium-voltage power cables ranging from 5 kV through 35 kV and above.
  • Perform installations of shielded medium-voltage cable systems, including EPR and XLPE insulated cables.
  • Install and terminate medium-voltage cable accessories, including:
  • 600A and 900A deadbreak elbows and T-body connectors.
  • 200A loadbreak and deadbreak elbows.
  • Heat-shrink and cold-shrink cable terminations.
  • Premolded and tape-type cable splices.
  • Stress cones, insulation adapters, and cable connectors.
  • Cable grounding, shielding, and bonding systems.
  • Perform cable preparation, including insulation removal, semiconductive shield removal, conductor preparation, and installation of stress-control components.
  • Follow manufacturer installation instructions and ensure proper tooling, crimping, torque specifications, and installation techniques.
  • Troubleshoot cable failures, insulation breakdown, damaged terminations, and other medium-voltage cable system deficiencies.
  • Assist with electrical testing, including insulation resistance, Very Low Frequency (VLF) withstand testing, tan delta testing, and partial discharge testing.
  • Read and interpret electrical one-line diagrams, cable schedules, construction drawings, and manufacturer installation instructions.
  • Work with medium-voltage switchgear, transformers, substations, and underground power distribution systems.
  • Assist with cable pulling, routing, rigging, and installation in conduits, cable trays, vaults, and underground duct banks.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of completed cable splices, terminations, repairs, and installation activities.
  • Follow all applicable OSHA, NFPA 70E, NETA, IEEE, and manufacturer safety requirements.
  • Participate in job hazard analyses (JHAs), lockout/tagout (LOTO), and electrical safety planning.
  • Work closely with electrical testing technicians, project managers, and field supervisors to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards.

Required Qualifications

  • Proven experience performing medium-voltage cable splicing and terminations, preferably on 5 kV through 35 kV systems.
  • Strong understanding of medium-voltage cable construction, insulation systems, semiconductive shielding, metallic shielding, and grounding requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience installing medium-voltage elbows, T-bodies, stress cones, cable splices, and terminations.
  • Ability to independently prepare, splice, and terminate medium-voltage cables in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
  • Experience working with EPR and XLPE insulated power cables.
  • Proficiency in using cable preparation tools, hydraulic crimping equipment, torque tools, and other specialized cable installation equipment.
  • Ability to read electrical drawings, cable schedules, and technical installation manuals.
  • Understanding of electrical safety procedures, including arc-flash hazards, shock protection, LOTO, and proper PPE.
  • Ability to work in industrial environments, substations, underground vaults, and outdoor construction sites.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project locations as required.

  • Five (5) or more years of hands-on medium-voltage cable splicing and termination experience.
  • Manufacturer training or certification in medium-voltage cable accessories, including 3M, TE Connectivity/Raychem, Eaton Cooper Power Systems, Elastimold, or equivalent manufacturers.
  • Experience working with 15 kV, 25 kV, and 35 kV cable systems.
  • Experience installing 600A/900A separable connectors and 35 kV class cable terminations.
  • Familiarity with IEEE 48, IEEE 404, IEEE 386, and applicable cable installation standards.
  • Experience with NETA ATS and NETA MTS electrical testing procedures.
  • Experience performing or assisting with VLF, tan delta, and partial discharge testing.
  • Experience in utility substations, data centers, power generation facilities, and industrial electrical distribution systems.
