SmartSubs is an EdTech start-up I co-founded. It helps native French speakers improve their English skills watching their favourite movies and TV shows with so-called 'smart subtitles' that translate the difficult words and expressions in real time. Moreover, we created a similar product automatically translating difficult words and expressions from online newspapers through a Chrome add-on. The day after you watched your movie or read your article, you receive an email reminding you of the words and expressions you encountered. From there you can start a quiz which quotes the sentences you heard or read with the difficult word or expression in order to help you assimilate the vocabulary in the context where you've seen it. SmartSubs was featured in the top 100 French startups to invest in in 2015 according to the French magazine Challenges. It was also featured on TV broadcast channels Canal+ and D8 as well as newspapers such as Huffington Post and Konbini. Among the various roles I played as a founder, I am the most proud of the following: - Increased the user base to 20k, generated 200k views on our promotional video on YouTube (see below) - Negotiated with key potential partners: the VP Marketing and the B2B partnership manager at Warner Bros France, the CEO of Gymglish (2M users), the CEO of Reverso (the European leader of online translation) - Audited legal issues interviewing dozens of jurists specialized in copyright and translation - Developed a unique and proprietary technology ranking vocabulary’s difficulty in Python - Worked with 3 high school English teachers who used movies as a key material for teaching English - Obtained a spot in the tech startup accelerator Startup42 (7 startups selected among 90) Stopped the company due to the uncertainty of the business model (copyright on artistic content with huge barrier to entry) and the overwhelming challenge of making a startup (constant multitasking, co-founders dissension, making no money for months)
