Insightful project providing external penetration testing services for a medium size client who will remain anonymous as per their request (defense sector). As an independent pentester, my mission was to put on my "ethical hacker" hat and meticulously probe their web applications and underlying server infrastructure, just as a real-world attacker might. The goal, of course, was to identify any potential vulnerabilities before malicious actors could exploit them. We struck gold on a few helped by the SOC databases and my dark web connections (no i did not have to pay anything for the exploits). My process involved a comprehensive approach, starting with reconnaissance to understand their digital footprint, then moving into deep dives on their web applications for common weaknesses like injection flaws, broken authentication, and cross-site scripting (among others). Simultaneously, I was scrutinizing their server configurations, network services, and anything else exposed to the internet that could be a potential entry point. It was honestly based off my experience a simple yet rewarding engagement, uncovering several areas for improvement that the client is now actively addressing to strengthen their security posture. It's always great to see a client so committed to proactive security! Enjoyed collaborating with their team even though at times it was like we were speaking separate languages due to their lack of experience but contributing to making the digital world a safer place, one byte at a time was fun.
