I work on feedhandlers. Here the job is mostly maintenance. Understanding bug reports, identifying in the code where the problem arise, fixing it and possibly finding other potential related problems. Elaborating scripts to demonstrate the problem is no more, and that the change hasn't introduced any regression. Besides bugs, there is also upgrades, be it new protocols, new underlying libraries, new features... Overall the job is more about analysis than about actual coding; the environment is very friendly I use C++ of course, and a good deal of unix-fu (bash, sed, awk, ...)

I worked in a team in the back office, on interest rate derivatives, and rate swaps. I had an interesting project, building a routing daemon, which would connect asynchronously to a WebSphere MQ, receive messages, process them, and generate other messages for downstream processing. It was fun... it was written in C, made extensive use of error handling and logging to provide a safe operation. It used dynamic modules loaded from configuration directives. It used a lot of libxml2 to look inside xml messages and generate new ones. I had other mundane tasks in maintenance, job control, database, ...
