Manager, Bioengineering Research Group

Phoenix Children's Hospital Woldwide

Sep 2012 - Jul 2015

2 years 11 months

Created and ran a bioengineering research laboratory within the neurosurgery and neuro-intensive care units, supervising students, residents and staff. Brain-computer interfaces: 3D cursor control by thought from ECoG; somatosensory and language cortical mapping — the basis of two granted US patents. Epilepsy and critical care: spatiotemporal characterization of seizure evolution; automated multimodal neuromonitoring in the ICU (Moberg CNS). Combined functional cortical mapping with seizure-focus localization to define the minimal resection for epilepsy surgery — removing the epileptogenic zone while sparing eloquent cortex. Built a neurosurgical outcomes platform: patient pathways reconstructed from hospital databases via ICD and CPT codes, with an app for residents to capture 3- and 6-month post-operative follow-up, producing dashboards that compared outcomes across surgical techniques for the same procedure, so surgeons could choose which technique to favor on measured outcomes. Built the signal processing pipelines and statistical models in Matlab and C++ over large clinical datasets (EEG, ECoG), including acquisition and SQL storage; led grants, publications and patent work.
