Introduction

I developed a method based on truncated pluri-Gaussian random fields to model sedimentary rocks in the subsurface. Gaussian fields are infered based on asymmetric Markovian and non-Markovian transition probabilities between the indicator variable (rock facies). This is done by integrating the Gaussian function based on a truncation rule user-defined. The simulation itself is based on spectral simulation combined with kriging to constrain to local data. These resulted in a geostatistical method able to model complex geological observations like cyclicity and rhythmicity.

The project was to study the possibility of adding fracture modeling in the Leapfrog geomodeling software in order to understand the flow impact for reservoir engineering. The DFN (Discrete Fracture Network) approach was used to model the fractures, and a EPM (Equivalent Porous Media) was used to transfer the fracture properties in a flow grid (TOUGH2). A real case study was done on the Wairakei Geothermal Reservoir, New Zealand. Knowledge acquired : - Geology : Fracture law distributions, fracture permeability - Geostatistics : Kriging, SGS, object-based simulations - Programming : NumPy Library for Python - Geomodeling : Leapfrog software
